On the first day of art I like to do a lesson where students are able to get to know the people at their table. This year each table took on the challenge of making the tallest tower possible with very limited materials. They had to work together as a team, divide up jobs, and think outside the box. 5th grade was given an extra challenge as well. They could not talk for the first 5 minutes which made it extra difficult to try to figure out how to build a tower out of such random materials. Still, the managed to accomplish such a daunting task. Each student got to choose a landmark and then draw the landmark as accurately as possible.  Below is a finished example. We are only picking one or two objects to color so that we can emphasize those areas.
